Keep Your Elderly Loved Ones Walking

A persons’ manner of walking changes with age.  This is also called “gait”.

Gait abnormalities or unsteadiness are a common presenting complaint, especially in older people.  Physically inactive people can lose as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after age 30. Even if you are active, you’ll still have some muscle loss as you age.For eldery people, weakness and loss of stamina can interfere with physical activity.  Reduced activity further shrinks muscle mass.  As quality of vision decreases with age many older people have a hard time seeing and adjust their gait to a slowed or shuffling pattern.  Many people also have a strong mental fear of falling.  Add balance challenges to the mix and it starts to make sense as to why many older people fall.

Try these exercises with your loved ones to keep their legs strong, gait normal and balance at its peak to keep them walking.  Make sure someone is nearby for them to hold onto if they get unsteady.

Strengthening your loved ones’ legs and giving them confidence will help them continue walking for a long time!
